چکیده
Surface alloys are a highly tunable class of low dimensional materials with the opportunity to tune and control spin charge carrier functionalities on nanoscale. Here, we focus atomic mesoscopic structural details three distinctive binary rare-earth-noble metals (RE/NM) surface by employing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) energy electron diffraction (LEED). Using Dysprosium as guest element fcc(111) noble metal substrates, identify formation non-commensurate alloy superstructures which exhibit homogeneous moir\'e patterns for DyCu2/Cu (111) DyAu2/Au(111), while an inhomogeneous one is found DyAg2/Ag(111). The variations in local structure analyzed all observed differences discussed light lattice mismatches layer respect underlying substrate. For particularly intriguing case Dy-Ag alloy, does not show uniform long-range periodic structure, but consists hexagonal tiles separated extended domain walls. These walls exist relief in-plane strain within DyAg2 layer. Our findings clearly demonstrate that alloying tool tailor both atomic, also structures metallic heterostructures.

Before starting this module, it is assumed that the student is familiar with the crystalline nature of metals and alloys, and understands the terms interstitial, vacancy, substitutional solid solution, binary alloy. متن کاملSurface-state electron dynamics in noble metals
Theoretical investigations of surface-state electron dynamics in noble metals are reported. The dynamically screened interaction is computed, within many-body theory, by going beyond a free-electron description of the metal surface. Calculations of the inelastic linewidth of Shockley surface-state electrons and holes in these materials are also presented. While the linewidth of excited holes at...
متن کاملSurface Plasmon Waves on noble metals at Optical Wavelengths
In this paper the variation of the propagation constant, the attenuation coefficient, penetration depth inside the metal and the dielectric has been evaluated. The propagation characteristics of Surface Plasmon Waves (SPWs) which exists on noble metals like gold (Au), silver (Ag) and aluminium (Al) due to the formation of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs), have been evaluated theoretically and ...
متن کاملSurface Femtochemistry: Frustrated Desorption of Alkali Atoms from Noble Metals
The electronic excitation of chemisorbed Cs atoms through the coherent photoinduced charge transfer from the Cu(111) surface turns on repulsive forces that initiate the dissociative wave packet motion. Due to unusually slow electronic relaxation, with the interferometric time-resolved two-photon photoemission technique it is possible to follow the characteristic change in the surface electronic...
